Defense Ministry meets ‘Alligators’
Russian Air Force begins to receive new weaponry. The army has already received four serial multi-purpose, all-weather helicopters Ka-52 ‘Alligator’. On May 24 at the Chernigov airbase airfield (Far East Air Force Command), there was a solemn ceremony of reception of new weapons, said the official representative of the Air Force Department of press-service and information of the Defense Ministry, Colonel Vladimir Drick. A complete refurbishment of the Chernigov airbase with new technology and equipment is scheduled for completion by the end of 2012.The "Progress" manufacturer of these helicopters has already produced four more helicopters of the same type that will go to the Army Aviation of the Far East Command of Russia’s Air Force and Air Defense.
The new Ka-52 ‘Alligator’ is an improved Ka-50 ‘Black Shark’. The ‘Alligator’ may function as a control center of a helicopter team. A specific feature of the new helicopter is the presence of two rotors rotating in opposite directions. The helicopter is produced as a two-seater version housing a pilot and a navigator. The main mission of the Alligator is air reconnaissance.
The Ka-52 was put into mass production after a series of successful tests in December 2008. The holding company "Helicopters of Russia" headed the supervision of the work at the "Progress" plant. The Ka-52 can attain a top speed up to 310 km / h, while its cruising altitude can be up to 5500 meters. The helicopters can perform combat missions at a distance up to 520 kilometers. The armament on board features 30-millimeter cannons, 4 air-to-air missiles and 12 anti-tank guided missiles ‘Whirlwind’.
