Putin orders to look into cause of Russian fuel crisis
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin instructed all competent authorities to trace the reasons of fuel shortage that has arisen in several regions of Russia, said on April 26 the Russian PM’s secretary, Dmitry Peskov. As of Saturday, the sales of gasoline were sharply limited, in particular, in the Altai region. Due to this sudden boom, the Rosneft and Gazprom Neft gas stations began to sell fuel only to discount card holders and not more than 20 liters per car.
According to the Russian Fuel Union, a complicated situation with gasoline has also developed in St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Novosibirsk and Sakhalin. The signs of fuel shortage were noticed in Moscow as well.
According to Peskov, "in connection with the situation in the fuel market in several regions of Russia", the Prime Minister instructed the "heads of all relevant departments to immediately conduct a thorough monitoring of the situation and report on the causes of the fuel shortage in some regions."
Peskov added that the assignment had been given so as "in the shortest time possible to formulate and implement a list of necessary measures to normalize the situation at the fuel market".
The representatives of independent gas stations do not exclude that the parties at fault for the lack of fuel are the oil companies that control nearly half the fuel market in the Altai region. The same point of view is shared by the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), which suspected the signs of a cartel agreement in the oil companies’ behavior.
The RF Ministry of Energy believes the gas prices will rise by 5% in the near future.
