Iskander Missile System enters service in Leningrad Military District
The first missile system Iskander (NATO's name SS-26 Stone) has entered service of the Leningrad Military District. This news has been relayed today on the radio station Ekho Moskvy by Commander-in-Chief of Russia's Army, Colonel-General Alexander Postnikov. "The first and very efficient missile system Iskander has been stationed in the Leningrad Military District," said Postnikov.Iskander is the family name of tactical missile systems Iskander, Iskander-E, Iskander-R. The Sysem was developed at the Kolomna KBM (Machine-Building Engineering Office). It is intended to use conventional warheads for the engagement of small and area targets (both moving and stationary), such as hostile fire weapons, air and antimissile defense weapons, command posts and communications nodes and troops in concentration areas, among others. It is expected to be a means of delivery of tactical nuclear weapons if need be. The missile Iskander is a powerful weapon, capable of fundamentally changing the military-political situation in certain regions of the world, so the issues of deployment of the Iskander systems as well as their export deliveries are often part of political consultations among countries.
