April 12, Cosmonautics Day

Cosmonautics Day is a holiday celebrated in Russia and other countries every April 12 and established to commemorate the first manned space flight.

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was launched aboard the Vostok spaceship from the Baikonur Spaceport and made the world's first orbital flight round the Earth. The flight in the near-Earth environment lasted 108 minutes.

In the Soviet Union, the Commemorative date was established by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet one year later, on 9 April 1962 and celebrated ever since under the name of Cosmonautics Day.

In the Russian Federation, Cosmonautics Day is celebrated in accordance with Article 1.1 of the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 No 32-FZ "On the Days of Military Glory and the Commemorative Dates in Russia."

On April 7, 2011, a special plenary session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which officially proclaimed April 12 the International Day of Manned Space Flight. More than 60 states co-sponsored the resolution.
