Assistant senator accused of traffic in lucrative appointments

An assistant to a member of the Federation Council has been accused of trading in positions of assistants and advisers in the upper and lower houses of parliament of the Russian Federation. Law enforcement officers have detained him. The detainee is a native of Georgia, said the Head of Public Relations Department of the RF Interior Ministry, Valery Gribakin.

"The employees of the department of criminal investigation, division "K", have detained a native of Georgia and resident of Yessentuki, 45-year-old Michael Beridze, who, as it turned out, is a member of a criminal gang", explained Gribakin.

The man had used his position and illegally offered clients to arrange the posts of assistants and advisers for them, and sold service certificates. For his machinations, Beridze had received from 150 to 200 thousand dollars.

"Based on this fact, a criminal case was initiated under Section 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code (fraud on a large scale). Beridze has already been charged and arrested", said Gribakin.

Beridze was caught in Moscow red-handed after he had received an advance for his proposed position in the amount of $80,000. A further search revealed that the detainee had unregistered blanks with facsimile signatures of the Federation Council members and officials at various levels, as well as uniforms and certificates of a general of Cossack troops.

At the same time, he kept only a part of the funds they received. The rest of the funds were sent off to Georgia to fund criminal groups where he was involved. The investigators are currently determining the rest of the gang. Beridze will be also checked for involvement in other crimes.
