After this summer’s smog and heat, Russians are in for epidemic of influenza and ARD
The abnormal heat this summer will cause subsequent colds, flues and ARDs among Russians, said the country's chief sanitary officer Gennady Onishchenko.According to him, because of the heat and smog, rather than to accumulate the stamina during the summer, as it usually happens, the bodies of Russians turned out to be weakened. All vital resources have been exhausted, the immune resistance – compromised.
”In some regions there is still an unfavorable background: the high content of oxides of carbon, nitrogen and smoke. That’s why soon a seasonal surge in cases of influenza and ARD shall be expected. In addition, it may develop in an escalated mode”, warns Onishchenko.
It is worth bearing in mind that the heat of the 2010 summer and the ensuing smog enveloping the central regions of the country has already led to a two-fold increase in mortality.
As reported before, the head of the Department of Health in Moscow, Andrei Seltsovsky had admitted that "on regular days, there are 360-380 deaths per day, and now we have about 700. Lethality has soared twice as normal".
