Former Yukos vice president Vasily Alexanian dies in Moscow

Russian lawyer and businessman, former executive vice president of Yukos with presidential powers, Vasily Alexanian, died on Monday in his home in Moscow. He was 39.

Alexanian had been suffering from several deadly diseases. He was kept in custody for a long time, but later he was relieved of criminal liability due to his illness.

Vasily Alexanian served time in jail ‘Matrosskaya Tishina’ (Sailor's Silence) in Moscow. In 2006, he was detected with AIDS in a dangerous stage. A bit later, he was found suffering from a number of dangerous diseases, including tuberculosis and cancer. However, the Moscow City Court refused to release the ailing convict and extended his sentence. Only 2 years later, in December 2008, the court ruled to release Alexanian on bail of 50 million rubles. At that time he was already in the hospital.

As previously reported,Vasily Alexanian was charged on two counts – money laundering and embezzlement. He was in fact accused of embezzling about $330 million from the former Yukos production unit Tomskneft, and shares worth $493 million from Eastern Oil Company and its partners.
