First new intercontinental ballistic missile test ends in failure

The first test of a new ballistic missile for Russia’s strategic forces failed. The test took place at spaceport Plesetsk.

The launch was carried out on September 27 at 11:08 MSK. However, it ended in failure. The rocket was lost from radar screens, and then collapsed on the territory of the spaceport.

It was found 2 hours later, at 13:10 GMT, in the territory of the spaceport, eight kilometers from the launch pad. It was discovered with the help of a Mi-8 chopper. Fortunately, as a result of the crash, no one was hurt.

The missile, whose test ended in such a failure, is a prototype of a new intercontinental ballistic missile of the fifth generation. It is planned that by 2018, the field strength of the Strategic Missile Forces shall consist of not less than 80% of such missiles.
